AIA Spokane Announced the Winners of the Excellence in Masonry Design Awards

2022 AIA Spokane Design Awards Dinner

Spokane, WA – September 22, 2022 – The American Institute of Architects (AIA) Spokane held their 2022 Robert Fraser Excellence in Masonry Design Awards last week to showcase the best masonry projects completed around Eastern Washington in the past year. Held in conjunction with the AIA’s monthly meeting at the Historic Davenport Hotel in Downtown Spokane, the event was sponsored by the Masonry Industry Promotion Group and the Eastern Washington Masonry Producers Association.

20 projects were nominated and six were recognized for their outstanding implementation of structural design, color, and texture among brick, concrete masonry units, and natural stone buildings. Two of the winning projects deserve special recognition for the use of Mutual Materials brick throughout their designs.

Glover Middle School, designed by NAC Architecture, used two different brick color blends to make it one of the crown jewels within the Spokane Public School District. One wing of the 135,000 square foot school incorporated a mix of Pewter and Sea Gray Econs (3.5” x 11.5” x 3.5”). While the other side used a blend of Coal Creek and Clinker Econs, providing a nice contrast of color of texture.

The other project that used Mutual Materials brick was the Wonder Building, designed by the Wolfe Architectural Group. This adaptive reuse project used a blend of tumbled 2.25” Imperial Red and Inca brick, giving this 108,000 square foot building’s veneer a unique worn texture.

It was a great turnout for this year’s Masonry Design Awards held at the historic Davenport Hotel. It’s always great to re-connect with architects, engineers, and masons at this event. There were lots of unique CMU/brick design ideas used on the projects that were nominated this year.
