Lakewood High School | Arlington, WA | Mutual Materials

Completed in 2019, Lakewood High School in Arlington, Washington opened to roughly 750 students, about 45 miles north of Seattle. McGranahan Architects designed the only high school for the Lakewood School District, that was built next to the existing high school while school was in session.

McGranahan designed the roughly 161,000 square foot structure to foster a sense of individual identity for students within a larger community where they can contribute at different scales – civic, academic, and intimate. Academic proficiency is a core component of Lakewood’s contemporary education with an emphasis on “soft-skills” like problem-solving, collaboration and meaningful contribution.

The design concept was to reflect the contemporary values while being mindful of the local heritage and its place amongst lakes, farmland, and commercial properties. Lakewood High School has become a beacon for the community as well as a template for all new comprehensive high schools being constructed. The project took 21 months to complete and includes a new synthetic turf football field and Olympic quality track.

Lakewood High School was constructed with a Mutual Materials face brick veneer consisting of a wide variety of colors – Goldenrod, Ebony, Vintage, Sienna, Burgundy, and Glacier. Typically, an architect will spec a custom brick blend consisting of three colors to create a unique aesthetic, but this project has six colors giving it an unmistakable look that leaves a lasting impression. Mutual Materials was truly excited to be involved in this project.

Allied Construction Associates, Inc. was the general contractor, spearheading the project and the mason contractor was R&D Masonry.
