Chuck’s Produce and Street Market is an independent family-owned market catering to the people of the Vancouver, Washington area. Committed to offering fresh and local products, Chuck’s Produce and Street Market places emphasis on offering organic goods in a healthy, family-oriented environment.
When Chuck’s decided to open a second location, they wanted to implement practices aligned with their company motto, “You never go wrong doing the right thing.” With an adjacent Critical Aquifer Recharge Area that discharges stormwater to a nearby Salmon Creek, a fish-bearing stream, Chuck’s Produce knew contributing to a greener environment by using an interlocking permeable pavement system was in alignment with offering organic products.
This led Chuck’s to Lenity Architecture and AKS Engineering for help in designing their new location with an emphasis on sustainability. The obvious answer for the parking lot at Chuck’s was permeable interlocking concrete pavers. With the help of Colson & Colson (general contractor) and Eastern States Paving (hardscape contractor), all teams collaborated to install almost 29,000 square feet of permeable interlocking concrete pavers from Mutual Materials in the parking stalls and sidewalks.
Unlike other porous surfaces, permeable pavers can manage stormwater for up to five times their installed space, handling up to 165 inches of water per hour. This is due to the voids between the pavers that direct stormwater directly into the soil below, preventing pooling across the surface area and silt laden with heavy metals from leaching into Salmon Creek.
I don’t think the public even knows this is a permeable paver system. (But they do know) is that there’s no water ponding at all, and also no erosion on the site. –
